  6. The locus of a squirrel is a tree:
  7. the locus of a man, the track
  8. his altering body draws within his land.
  9. It is a multicurving envelope
  10. of turning surfaces: the limbs burrow
  11. like the twist in a marble.
  12. Sharing a home, we penetrate
  13. each other's space; we weave a cloak
  14. which walks and dances, celebrating time.
  15. Our minds call to each other like birds.
  16.  
  17. The n-dimensional coordinates of mind
  18. define positions not in rooms
  19. but in emotions: each mood perches
  20. in a tree of meanings, sprung from an infant's
  21. brash taxonomy. A public space
  22. touches each person's tree at many points;
  23. and as our bodies quarter public ground
  24. we leap through private branches, making curves
  25. like streaks of racing monkeys in the leaves
  26. hurling their sunlight-maculated limbs.
  27.  
  28. Moving needs calculation: the limbs reposition
  29. in a blizzard of points of balance and tension
  30. driving through space with the nerves hissing.
  31. The molecules in all the muscles grip,
  32. inching, by microseconds, all the bones
  33. from angle to angle, levering and pausing;
  34. and so too every leaping mood is made
  35. of nerve impulses pouring through the brain
  36. like starlings smoking through the autumn dusk,
  37. each nerve a vector in a race of cells.

  39. The tree of forests turns,
  40. to be inspected: every angle shows,
  41. along the corridors between the stems,
  42. another forest, touching all the rest
  43. at every point. Here one can stand and watch
  44. the skeletons of grammar, clambering cleverly
  45. as lorises from cause to effect,
  46. and neatly juggling verbs. Each word
  47. bristles like a chestnut, caltrop in a space
  48. of a billion neuronal dimensions.

  50. Music, a dancing forest made of air,
  51. declares your close internal world to friends--
  52. the glowing branches of a human soul
  53. growing and moving in a space of notes,
  54. the walking limbs of tunes, all heaven in one mind.
  55. Heraldic birds with king-sized laughing songs
  56. strut and go looping in this flower-filled world.
  57. Each music is a grammar built of moods,
  58. each music grows up freely in one mind,
  59. each bears a set of movements as a gift.
  60.  
  61. There is no music in that outer world
  62. but friends whose bodies as they die
  63. turn into sound.
